Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation's Nashua River Rail Trail Runs from Ayer to Nashua, NH This abandoned rail bed, once known as the "Hollis Branch" of the Boston and Maine railroad, was paved between 2001-2002 and officially opened for recreational use in October, 2002. The trail runs from a parking lot near the corners of 2A and 111 in Ayer center 10.5 miles to the New Hampshire border in Hoolis, then on to a trail parking lot on Gilson Rd. in Nashua, NH. It travels passed lovely ponds and marshes between Ayer and Groton, then through Groton just west of the center of town over the old Rt. 119 railroad bridge, then across Common St. and Sand Hill Rd., then enters the J. Harry Rich State Forest abutting the Nashua River. Just before the trail enters Pepperell, it comes abreast of the Nashua river to offer lovely water views for the next full mile until it reaches East Pepperell at Railroad Square, where you'll find drinks, ice cream, and other snacks from local businesses. The trail continues north across Groton St, past the Boy Scout Parcel conservation land and into New Hampshire. Pepperell residents can park in Railroad Square and head south toward the Nashua River or cross Groton St. and go north toward Hollis. If you wish, download a PDF copy of Mass Highway's map of the Massachusetts section of the trail.
