Renovation of Pepperell Town Hall (Massachusetts Historical Commission Grant)
Sitting at 1 Main St., Pepperell Town Hall is an iconic building that is the center of the Town's historic and continuing place of Government. The lower and main floor levels of the building currently house all of the Town's governmental activity with the exception of Police, Fire and DPW functions. The upper floor had been previously utilized as a meeting space for Town Meeting and other Board and Committee meetings, along with plays, banquets, and other town gatherings. Meetings and events were moved to the lower level of the Town Hall building due to lack of accessibility for those with mobility issues and the failure of a section of ceiling tiles and flooring on the 2nd floor making it unsafe. Until the beginning of this year, the hall was currently used for document storage. The public had expressed an interest in revitalizing the upper hall space to be used again for public gatherings, as it would allow significantly more space than the current conference room used for public meetings. The space is also significantly deteriorating and without taking steps to repair and restore the space now, it is feared that the space will continue to deteriorate to the point where repair would not be possible. The Town plans to complete the project in multiple phases, with the first phase including the 2nd floor insulation and interior finish stabilization, restoration and/or replacement, and electrical upgrades. Future phases will include restoration of the historic artwork, HVAC upgrades, and accessibility improvements with the addition of an elevator. Overall, the community would like to see the upper hall space used once again so the historic value can be appreciated.
