A heat wave is described as at least 3 consecutive days with temperatures exceeding the 90’s. This will be the case starting Tuesday of this week through Thursday. Everyone should take this very seriously as personal health can be affected.
During this period try to limit outdoor activity, particularly anything physically challenging, with mid-day before and after noon the most important. Avoid prolonged, direct exposure to the sun and wear appropriate loose-fitting clothing that breathes more easily. A thin hat that is light in color, lightweight shirts and shorts, etc. Drink water, more than usual and limit beverages that can contribute to dehydration such as alcohol, caffeinated liquids such as coffee and regular tea, sugary drinks or drinks with a high sodium content. If outside, take advantage of shaded areas and rest frequently. At home use curtains to reduce sunlight, use fans and air conditioning to circulate the air in your environment, and avoid using the oven. Keep an eye on pets who can easily be affected as well and keep them in the coolest place possible. Lastly, check on elderly or infirm neighbors who might be adversely affected during this time.
Should you need somewhere to cool down, public buildings like stores or shopping malls can offer a period of respite. In town, both the Albert Harris Senior Center and the Lawrence Library are places you can go to spend a little time during regular operating hours. Expect normal services at those facilities and note that Wednesday is a holiday so watch their web sites for hours, if any.
Though temperatures will climb into the 90’s during the day, temps each evening will drop to a much more comfortable low 70s, so you will get a reprieve each day. Be prepared, stay healthy!
